The book club gift exchange everyone will love
A white elephant swap, but every gift is a book. Here are the rules we use, a card you can print and read aloud, and a few ways to make it your club's own.
The rules, in six steps
- 1 Everyone brings one wrapped book, about $15 to $25. Write a three-word clue on the paper ("cozy, snowy, heartbreaking") so people pick by vibe, not by shape.
- 2 Draw numbers. Number 1 picks a gift from the pile and unwraps it.
- 3 Each person after that either unwraps a new gift or steals one that's already open.
- 4 Anyone who gets stolen from picks again: unwrap a new gift or steal a different one. No instant steal-backs.
- 5 A book is frozen after its third steal. It stays where it landed.
- 6 Once the pile is empty, Number 1 gets one final steal. Then the books go home.
Three twists on the swap
Blind Date with a Book
Wrap every book in brown paper and write only a few words on the front: the genre, the mood, one hook. Nobody judges by the cover because there isn't one.
Favorite-Book Swap
No stealing, just stories. Everyone brings the book they'd press into a friend's hands and explains why, in one minute, before it goes into the pile.
The Cozy Bundle
Pair the book with something small: a tea or cocoa that matches its mood, a candle, a book light. The bundle is half the fun of unwrapping.
Make it the December meeting
- Discuss the November book first, then swap. Gifts are the dessert.
- Send the budget and the three-word-clue rule with the invite.
- Ask everyone to write their name inside the cover. It's a keepsake.
- Need a pick for January? The swap pile is a ready-made shortlist.
Plan the whole night in a minute
Enter your book and pick a vibe. You'll get discussion questions, food and drink pairings, a playlist, a host guide and printable bookmarks, which make a lovely tuck-in for every wrapped gift.

How does a book club white elephant gift exchange work?
Everyone brings one wrapped book. You draw numbers, and in turn each person either unwraps a new book from the pile or steals one someone already opened. A book is frozen after its third steal, and the first person gets one last steal at the end.
How much should we spend?
$15 to $25 works for most clubs: enough for a new paperback or hardcover, plus a small treat if you want to bundle one. Agree on the number ahead of time so nobody feels awkward.
What if I end up with a book I've already read?
Steal something else on your turn, or trade after the game ends. Many clubs also allow a well-loved used copy of a favorite book, which tends to come with the best stories.
How many people do you need?
Six to twelve is the sweet spot. With fewer than five there is not much to steal; with more than fifteen, split into two circles so it doesn't drag.
Can we do a book gift exchange virtually?
Yes. Mail books ahead with a do-not-open-until note, run the draw on the call, and have each person unwrap on camera. Swap the stealing for a quick trade round at the end.
