A Married Little Christmas

A Married Little Christmas

Abby Jimenez
Cozy night

Three holiday novellas from Abby Jimenez, collected into one warm, snow-dusted package about love, found family, and the small moments that make a season feel like home. Short, tender, and easy to finish in a weekend, which makes it a gift of a book club pick.

Soup, Cocoa, and Three Little Love Stories

Come be warm with us. We are reading Abby Jimenez's A Married Little Christmas, and there will be a pot of soup on the stove, a cocoa bar, and absolutely no pressure to have finished all three novellas.

Reading level: Easy

Best for: A club that reads for comfort and connection, and loves a December meeting with blankets, mugs, and nobody checking the clock

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.Where were you when you read this, and did you end up reaching for a blanket or a hot drink partway through? Set the scene for us.
  2. 2.Of the three novellas, which one did you sink into fastest, and what was the first moment that made you settle in and think, okay, I am staying here a while?

Digging in

  1. 1.These stories lean hard on holiday coziness, sweaters, snow, close quarters, warm kitchens. Which image from the collection do you think you will still be able to picture next December?
  2. 2.Jimenez writes about people choosing each other, not just falling for each other. Did any of that quiet choosing in these novellas remind you of someone in your own life?
  3. 3.All three stories feel like they happen in a sort of pocket out of time, where the usual rules relax. Have you ever had a holiday like that, where the normal world went quiet for a few days?
  4. 4.Shorter stories ask you to fall in love fast. Did the novella length feel generous and comforting to you, or did you find yourself wanting to linger longer in one of them?

Going deep

  1. 1.Jimenez tends to tuck real grief or fear underneath the twinkle lights. Was there a moment in any of these stories where the ache surprised you, and did it make the comfort land harder afterward?
  2. 2.Without giving anything away, each story arrives somewhere hopeful. Which one left you feeling the most cared for as a reader, and what do you think the book was quietly trying to tell you about making it through a hard season?

On the table & to sip

To eat

Big pot of creamy potato soup with a bread basket
The exact thing you want after coming in from the cold, and it holds on the stove so latecomers are never a problem
Pull-apart cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing
Warm, a little indulgent, and the smell does half the hosting for you. Store-bought dough is completely allowed
Christmas cookie plate where everyone brings their family recipe
Doubles as a conversation starter about holiday traditions, which is the heart of this collection

To sip

Slow cooker spiced cider with orange slices and cinnamon sticks (no alcohol)
Set it and forget it, non-alcoholic, and it makes the whole house smell like the book
Hot cocoa bar with marshmallows, peppermint sticks, and a bottle of peppermint schnapps alongside
Guests spike it or skip it, which keeps the night low-pressure for everyone
Mulled red wine with cloves and honey
Warm, fragrant, and very snowed-in-cabin, served in mugs rather than wine glasses

Run of show

7:00
Arrive and warm up
Cider in the slow cooker, cocoa bar ready, a basket of socks or a pile of blankets by the door. No agenda for the first half hour
7:30
Soup and cookie plate
Serve in mugs and bowls so everyone can eat on a couch rather than at a table
7:50
Warm-up round
Go around and have everyone name which novella they sank into first, and one holiday tradition the book made them think of
8:10
Three-story tour
Take each novella in turn, about ten minutes apiece, using the theme questions. Keep it loose and let tangents happen
8:45
The tender part
Move to the deep questions once everyone has a refill. Lower the lights a little and let people be sincere
9:10
Cookies, scorecards, and cozy goodbyes
Fill out scorecards together, read bookmark lines aloud, send everyone home with a cookie wrapped in a napkin

Host tips

  • Say up front that it is fine if someone only finished one or two of the three novellas. Low pressure is the whole point, and the structure makes it easy to include them.
  • Serve everything in mugs and bowls that can be held in a lap. Nobody gets vulnerable in a conversation while balancing a plate at a dining table.
  • Keep one gentle question in your pocket for lulls (what comforted you most in this book?) and resist filling silences too quickly. The pauses are where the good answers come from.
