Best Offer Wins

Best Offer Wins

Marisa Kashino
Cozy night

A funny, fast-moving mystery set in the cutthroat world of high-end real estate, where open houses hide secrets and everyone is selling something. It is the rare whodunit you can sink into with a blanket and still want to talk about all night.

Come Snoop Around With Us

Bring your slippers and your worst open house story. There is dumplings, cider, and one very suspicious real estate mystery to talk through.

Reading level: Easy Pages: 288

Best for: A club that likes a mystery with a sense of humor and a low-stakes, chatty night together

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.Tell us about the nosiest you have ever been at an open house or a friend's new place. What did you snoop at first?
  2. 2.Where did you do most of your reading of this one, and did it turn into a one-more-chapter book for you?

Digging in

  1. 1.This book lives in the gap between how a house is staged and how people actually live. What is a corner of your own home you would hide from a listing photo, and what does it mean to you?
  2. 2.The story is full of people performing success. When in your own life have you felt that pressure to look like you have it together, and what helped you let go of it?
  3. 3.Which moment of humor landed hardest for you, and did the comedy make the darker beats easier or harder to sit with?
  4. 4.The book treats home as both prize and pressure point. What does the word home actually mean to you right now, and has that changed in the last few years?

Going deep

  1. 1.By the end you have watched a lot of people justify what they wanted. Was there anyone whose wanting you felt tender toward, even when you could not approve of it?
  2. 2.Without saying how things land, did finishing this book leave you feeling comforted, unsettled, or a little of both? What in the writing or the characters put you there?

On the table & to sip

To eat

Open house snack board (brownies, lemon bars, and a bowl of mixed nuts)
A loving nod to the cookies-and-staging bribery of real estate showings, and nothing to cook if you do not want to.
Bubbling cheese and caramelized onion dip with a basket of warm bread
The ultimate make-the-house-smell-like-home trick, served warm and shared straight from the dish.
A big pot of chicken and dumplings
The soft, nurturing counterweight to all that cold, glossy ambition. One pot, ladled into mugs so people can read and eat on the couch.

To sip

Closing Day Hot Toddy
Whiskey, honey, lemon, hot water. Warm, celebratory, and slightly smug, exactly like someone who just got their offer accepted.
Sparkling wine in mismatched glasses
Every sale ends in a toast. Keeping the glassware homey instead of matched keeps it cozy rather than showy.
Spiced apple cider with a cinnamon stick (no alcohol)
The scent realtors actually simmer on the stove to make a house feel lived-in. Non-alcoholic and perfect in a blanket.

Run of show

7:00
Doors open, slippers on
Set a basket of socks or throw blankets by the door. Ladle cider and let people drift toward the snack board.
7:20
Warm-up: your nosiest open house
Go around with the snooping question while everyone is still eating. It gets the laughing started before anyone has to be insightful.
7:40
Dinner in mugs
Serve the chicken and dumplings and move everyone to soft seating. Discussion goes better when nobody is sitting upright at a table.
8:00
Theme talk, dealer's choice
Put the theme questions on cards in a bowl and let people pull one. No pressure to answer in order or at all.
8:35
Trivia break with dessert
Brownies and lemon bars out, trivia read aloud, teams optional. Keep score loosely or not at all.
8:55
Deep questions and scorecards
End with the two deep questions, then pass out scorecards and bookmarks as people fill up on one last cup.

Host tips

  • Say up front that nobody has to have finished the book, and mean it. Spoiler-free seats on one side of the room is a real and useful option.
  • Cook the dumplings and the dip in advance and keep both warm. Your only job after 7:00 is refilling mugs.
  • If the room goes quiet, do not rescue it with analysis. Ask what somebody's own first apartment smelled like and the conversation will come right back.

Playlist

Low, jazzy, slightly mischievous background music: the sound of a suspicious living room at dusk, lamps on, rain outside.

  1. 01 Cheek to Cheek - Ella Fitzgerald
  2. 02 Our House - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
  3. 03 Money - The Flying Lizards
  4. 04 Peace Piece - Bill Evans
  5. 05 Sunday Kind of Love - Etta James
  6. 06 This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads
  7. 07 Harvest Moon - Neil Young
  8. 08 Dream a Little Dream of Me - The Mamas & The Papas
