Book Club Night Kit
Bound And Unbound

Bound And Unbound

Ali Hazelwood
Cozy night

Two paranormal romance novellas from Ali Hazelwood, each pairing people who should not trust each other and then letting secrets, bargains, and slow-building tenderness do the rest. Short enough to finish in a weekend, swoony enough to talk about all night.

Two Novellas, One Very Warm Couch

Come read Ali Hazelwood's Bound and Unbound with us: paranormal romance, unlikely pairs, and a short book you can actually finish. Cider on the stove, cookies in the oven, blankets provided.

Reading level: Easy

Best for: A club that likes to curl up, laugh, and gush about romance tropes without anyone being made to defend their taste

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.Where did you do most of your reading for this one, and did you end up staying up later than you meant to?
  2. 2.Which of the two novellas pulled you in faster, and what was the moment you felt yourself settle in and relax into it?

Digging in

  1. 1.Both stories start with two people who have every reason to keep their guard up. What did it feel like watching that guard come down, and was there a small moment that made you sigh out loud?
  2. 2.Secrets sit at the center of these pairings. When someone in your own life finally told you the thing they had been holding back, did it feel like these books describe it, or was it gentler, or messier?
  3. 3.Hazelwood writes bickering that is really affection in disguise. Who in your life do you talk to that way, and did reading it make you miss them a little?
  4. 4.Paranormal romance lets characters be openly inhuman and still be loved for it. Did any part of that feel comforting to you, like the book was being kind about the parts of people that do not fit?

Going deep

  1. 1.Vengeance is one of the forces that brings these pairs together. Did carrying that much old hurt feel exhausting to you as a reader, and did you find yourself quietly hoping someone would set it down?
  2. 2.Novellas ask you to fall for people fast. Thinking back across both stories without giving anything away, what did you most want for these characters, and did the book leave you feeling warm, wistful, or a little of both?

On the table & to sip

To eat

Baked brie with honey and rosemary, torn bread for dipping
Rich, communal, and a little decadent, the kind of shared dish that fits stories about two people who keep ending up closer than planned. Unwrap, bake 15 minutes, done.
Slow-cooker meatballs in a dark tomato sauce
Deep red, warm, and faintly dramatic, a nod to the paranormal appetites running under both novellas. Dump everything in before guests arrive and ignore it.
Browned butter chocolate chunk cookies with flaky salt
Comfort reading deserves comfort baking, and the sweet-salty bite mirrors the sharp banter softening into tenderness.

To sip

Mulled spiced cider (non-alcoholic) (no alcohol)
A pot of this on the stove makes the whole house smell like the gathering already went well. Cinnamon, orange peel, a few cloves.
Blackberry hot toddy
Honey, lemon, whiskey, and muddled blackberry for that dark fruit color. Soothing, a little indulgent, good for a long slow conversation.
Red wine, something soft and berry-forward
Low effort, clearly on theme for a paranormal night, and it pours itself all evening without you hosting it.

Host tips

  • Say up front that nobody has to have finished both novellas, this is a short book and the point is the room, not the homework.
  • Set a loose spoiler rule for the second story so anyone mid-read can stay in the conversation.
  • If the talk drifts to other romance books everyone loves, let it. Cozy nights are allowed to wander and come back.
