Book Club Night Kit
Burn Of The Everflame

Burn Of The Everflame

Penn Cole
Cozy night

The fourth book in Penn Cole's Kindred's Curse Saga turns up the heat on war, rebellion, and alliances nobody saw coming, making it a perfect pick for a club already invested in Diem and her world. It is big, emotional romantasy that people will want to talk through with a blanket on their lap.

Blankets, Stew, and One More Rebellion

Come curl up with us for Burn of the Everflame. There will be a pot of something warm on the stove, mugs of spiced cider, and a whole evening to talk about how this one wrecked us. Pajamas encouraged.

Reading level: Moderate

Best for: A club that loves long fantasy series, cares deeply about characters, and would rather feel things together than dissect structure

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.Where did you do most of your reading for this one, and did you have a comfort ritual (a blanket, a mug, a certain chair) that got you through the tense chapters?
  2. 2.Be honest: was there a moment you had to put the book down and walk around the room for a minute? Tell us where you were and what you did.

Digging in

  1. 1.This saga keeps asking people to trust someone they have every reason not to. When you were reading, whose side did your heart keep quietly rooting for, even when your head said be careful?
  2. 2.Rebellion in this world is exhausting as well as thrilling. Which scenes made you feel the tiredness of it, and did any of that land close to home for you?
  3. 3.Diem's world is full of people choosing between the family they were born into and the one they found. Which of those bonds gave you the warmest feeling while reading, and why that one?
  4. 4.An unlikely alliance sits at the center of this book. How did it feel to watch old enemies sit at the same table, and has forgiveness ever surprised you like that in your own life?

Going deep

  1. 1.Without spoiling anything, was there a moment where you felt genuinely proud of a character, the kind of proud you feel for a friend? Describe the feeling rather than the scene.
  2. 2.By the end of this installment, what were you carrying with you: hope, dread, or something more tangled? What do you want, gently, for these characters in the next book?

On the table & to sip

To eat

Slow-simmered root vegetable and barley stew with crusty bread
The kind of hearty, humble meal a rebel camp would ration out and a reader would want on a long night with a tense chapter
Honey butter rolls served warm in a cloth-lined basket
Golden, sweet, and made for sharing around a table, echoing the hearth-and-hospitality warmth of the found-family scenes
Spiced apple hand pies
Pocket-sized comfort with a bit of fire in the spice mix, a nod to the flame in the title without any heroic kitchen effort

To sip

Mulled cider with cinnamon, orange peel, and a spoon of honey (no alcohol)
Warm, non-alcoholic, and simmering on the stove so the whole house smells like the book's firelit scenes
Spiced honey mead (or a honey-forward cider) served slightly warmed
A gently indulgent nod to the saga's old-world fantasy taverns and long nights of plotting
Hot toddy with lemon and clove
Soothing, a little medicinal, perfect for the readers who need to steady their nerves after certain chapters

Run of show

7:00
Doors open, mugs in hands
Cider is already simmering. Hand everyone a warm drink before they even take their coat off.
7:15
Stew and rolls, no plates required
Serve in mugs or shallow bowls so people can curl up on couches instead of sitting upright at a table.
7:35
Warm-up round
Go around with the two warm-up questions. Keep it light and let people ramble about where they read.
8:00
Theme conversation
Pull theme questions from a bowl. Let tangents happen; this is a cozy night, not a seminar.
8:35
Hand pies and the deep two
Bring dessert out right as the questions get tender. Sugar makes big feelings easier to say out loud.
9:05
Trivia, scorecards, and next-book wishes
Close with quick trivia, fill out scorecards, then go around with one hope each for the next installment.

Host tips

  • Say up front that nobody has to have finished, and set a clear spoiler line (through which chapter) so the least-caught-up reader can stay in the room.
  • Keep a stack of soft blankets by the couch and dim the overheads in favor of lamps or candles. It changes the whole tone of the conversation.
  • If someone gets quiet, do not put them on the spot. Ask an easy feelings question instead: 'What part did you reread?' works almost every time.
