On the table

Savory Hand Pies

The kind of hearty, portable food a traveling warrior and a weary scholar would grab at a roadside inn. Use store-bought pastry for an easy, warm, crowd-pleasing bake.

Slow-Cooker Barley and Root Vegetable Stew with Crusty Bread

Rustic, nourishing, tavern-style comfort that fits the book's quasi-medieval world. It simmers all afternoon so the host can relax.

Warm Apple Honey Crumble with Cream

A homey, slightly indulgent dessert that suits Kingfisher's sweet-but-not-saccharine tone. Easy to make ahead and rewarm.

To sip

Spiced Honey Chamomile Tea No alcohol

A soothing, scholar's-desk kind of drink for long, thoughtful conversation. Comforting and caffeine-free.

Mulled Hard Cider

Warm cider with cinnamon, clove and orange peel, the sort of drink passed around a fire at a friendly inn.

Spiced Mulled Wine

A classic warming drink with an old-world feel that suits a fantasy setting and a candlelit room.
