A mercenary is forced to marry the president's son she once tried to kill, in a city split between the privileged and the struggling. It's a sharp, emotional story, and it goes down easily over something warm with good company.

Why it works for clubs

The forced-marriage premise gets everyone talking about trust, forgiveness, and who deserves a second chance
A heroine with rough edges gives readers plenty to root for, worry about, and argue over kindly
The divided city brings up gentle, personal conversation about where we come from and where we feel at home
It's full of feeling, so even quieter members will have a reaction they want to share

Warm-up questions

1 Before we open the book, tell us the snack, blanket, or spot that kept you company while you read this one. Did it make a good match for the story's mood?
2 The premise asks you to share a home with someone you once tried to hurt. What was your honest gut reaction when you first read that setup: delighted, nervous, or a bit of both?

Digging in

1 The city is split between privilege and poverty. Was there a moment when you felt the gap between those two worlds most strongly, and what did it stir up in you?
2 When someone has spent a lifetime looking after herself, letting others care for her can feel risky. Did any small kindness in the book make you feel unexpectedly tender?
3 Home comes up a lot in this story, whether it's lost, borrowed, or forced on someone. What does home feel like for you, and did the book make you think about it differently?
4 Being made to live alongside an enemy is uncomfortable, and at times it's funny too. Was there a moment that made you laugh, wince, or cover your face on the characters' behalf?

Going deep

1 Without giving away where things end up, how did your feelings about forgiveness shift as the story went on? Did the book leave you feeling hopeful, or more cautious, about second chances in your own life?
2 Thinking of the whole book, which relationship or moment will stay with you longest, and why do you think it touched you the way it did?

On the table

Lower-City Beef and Barley Stew in Bread Bowls

A hearty, stick-to-your-ribs pot that nods to the working streets of the divided city. Make it a day ahead in a slow cooker and just reheat it.

Uptown Honey-Fig Baked Brie

A small taste of the privileged side of town, melty and a little decadent, served with crusty bread and apple slices. It takes about 20 minutes in the oven.

Dark Chocolate Cherry Skillet Brownie

Deep red cherries and a sharp edge of dark chocolate suit a story about blades and softening hearts. Serve it warm with vanilla ice cream.

To sip

Blood Oath Mulled Wine

Red wine warmed with orange, cinnamon, and clove, a cozy toast to vows made under pressure. Keep it on low in a slow cooker so people can help themselves.

Mercenary's Hot Toddy

Whiskey, honey, lemon, and hot water. It's simple, strong, and comforting, like a guarded heroine who is kinder than she lets on.

Truce Chai Latte No alcohol

Spiced black tea with steamed milk and a spoonful of honey. A warm, gentle drink for calling a ceasefire, and it's alcohol-free.

Soft, candlelit indie folk with a little ache underneath, like a hearth fire in a dangerous city
