Written as a history kept by a maester of the Citadel, Fire & Blood follows House Targaryen from Aegon's Conquest onward. It's a sprawling dragon-filled saga that's lovely to pass around a fireside, a chapter or a favorite reign at a time.

Why it works for clubs

The history-book format means nobody needs to remember every name to join in
Each reign feels like its own fireside tale, so guests can bring the parts they loved most
Family bonds, loyalty, and belonging give easy ways into personal conversation
Dragons, castles, and feasts make it a natural fit for a candlelit, blanket-and-stew kind of night

Warm-up questions

1 If you could curl up in any one place from this book for a quiet evening (a hall in the Red Keep, a chamber on Dragonstone, a room at the Citadel), where would you choose, and what would you be sipping?
2 The book reads like old stories told by a maester. Who in your life told you family stories growing up, and did reading this bring back any of those memories?

Digging in

1 The Targaryens share a deep bond with their dragons. Did any rider-and-dragon pairing tug at your heart, and does it remind you of a pet or companion you've loved?
2 Plenty of people in these pages are hunting for a sense of home and belonging. Was there a moment when someone found (or lost) that feeling that stayed with you?
3 Among all the grand battles, were there small, tender moments, like a kindness, a friendship, or a family gathering, that felt like a warm spot in the story?
4 Our narrator often gives more than one account of the same event. When the storytellers disagreed, which version did your heart want to believe, and why?

Going deep

1 Watching family ties strain and break across generations can be hard to read. How did those parts make you feel, and did they change how you think about keeping peace in your own family?
2 Looking back at the whole book, which figure would you most want to sit beside at this table tonight, and what would you gently ask them about the choices history remembers them for?

On the table

Dragonstone Hearth Stew (beef and barley)

A hearty, slow-simmered pot that suits the stone halls and long nights of Westeros. Make it a day ahead and just warm it on the stove.

Crusty Bread Trenchers with Honey Butter

Thick slices of rustic bread with whipped honey butter nod to medieval feast tables. Good for dipping into the stew and easy to share.

Lemon Cakes with a Simple Glaze

A beloved Westerosi sweet that feels a little indulgent. Small loaf cakes or muffins with a lemon drizzle keep the effort low.

To sip

Mulled Dornish Red

Red wine warmed with orange peel, cinnamon, and cloves, a nod to the warm southern wines of Westeros. Keep it in a slow cooker so the room smells like a winter feast.

Honeyed Mead Toddy

Mead or honey wine gently warmed with a lemon slice and a pinch of spice, a cozy feast-hall sip for slow conversation.

Dragonfire Spiced Cider No alcohol

Hot apple cider with cinnamon sticks, star anise, and a spoonful of honey. Everyone can enjoy it, and it tastes like a warm hearth.
