Digging in

1 The North Country almost feels like a character in this series. Did the woods, lakes or weather remind you of a place that gives you peace, and how did reading about it make you feel?
2 Family loyalty runs deep in the O'Connor household. Was there a moment of support between them that warmed you or reminded you of someone in your own life?
3 The title suggests a place that feels sacred or blessed. What does 'God's country' mean to you personally, and where is yours?
4 Cork is shaped by both his Irish and Ojibwe roots. Did the way the book honors heritage and tradition stir any feelings about your own family's traditions?

Going deep

1 The book shows danger crashing into a season meant for rest and togetherness. How did it feel to watch that happen, and what helps you get back to calm when life takes an unexpected hard turn?
2 Looking back on the whole story, which moment of kindness, courage or quiet strength stayed with you after you closed the book, and why do you think it hit home?

On the table

Creamy Minnesota Wild Rice Soup

Wild rice is a treasured food of the Northwoods with deep roots in Ojibwe tradition. It's a filling, hug-in-a-bowl dish you can make ahead and keep warm in a slow cooker.

Mini Cheeseburger Sliders

A nod to Sam's Place, the O'Connor family burger stand. They're easy, crowd-pleasing and a bit indulgent, and they give the night a homey, casual feel.

Warm Blueberry Crumble Bars

Wild blueberries mean summer in the North Country, and a pan of bars is about as Minnesota as it gets. Serve them slightly warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

To sip

Maple Hot Chocolate No alcohol

Rich cocoa with a swirl of real maple syrup, a Northwoods treat that feels like sitting by a cabin fire. Top it with whipped cream.

Irish Coffee

A toast to Cork's Irish side. Hot coffee, a splash of Irish whiskey, brown sugar and a soft cream float make it a slow, comforting sipper.

Hot Spiced Apple Cider No alcohol

Simmer cider with cinnamon sticks and cloves so the house smells wonderful. Keep a bottle of spiced rum nearby for anyone who wants to spike theirs.
