Happy Snacking, Don't Die!

Alexis Nikole Nelson with Jeanelle Hayner Olson
Cozy night

Alexis Nikole Nelson (the Black Forager) turns foraging into pure joy, with snackable plant lore and recipes that make the outdoors feel like a pantry. It is the rare book club pick that sends everyone outside, then straight back to the kitchen.

Come Snack Like a Forager

Soft chairs, hot cider, and a skillet of something green and buttery. Bring your copy, your favorite weed, and your appetite.

Reading level: Easy

Best for: A club that likes to eat while it talks and does not mind a tangent about weeds

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.What is a plant, berry, or green you remember picking and eating as a kid, and who was with you?
  2. 2.Reading this, did you ever look up from the page and out a window to size up your own yard, sidewalk, or park? What did you spot?

Digging in

  1. 1.The book treats everyday weeds as delicious instead of disposable. Did that reframe soften anything for you about a place you had written off as boring?
  2. 2.Which recipe or preparation made your mouth water most, and what comfort food does it sit next to in your own memory?
  3. 3.The voice here is giddy and generous rather than instructional. How did that tone land on you, and did it make you braver about trying something new?
  4. 4.Foraging is knowledge handed down person to person. Who in your life taught you something about food that no cookbook could have, and how did it feel to be taught it?

Going deep

  1. 1.The book holds joy and hard history about Black Americans, land, and food in the same hand. How did you feel sitting with both at once, and did the joy feel like a kind of reclaiming to you?
  2. 2.By the time you closed the book, had your idea of what counts as abundance shifted? What felt newly available to you that you had not noticed before?

On the table & to sip

To eat

Dandelion green and bacon skillet dip with torn sourdough
A bitter green turned warm and rich, exactly the book's trick of making a weed feel like a treat.
Blackberry or elderberry hand pies
Wild fruit in the coziest possible wrapper, easy to make ahead and eat in an armchair.
Acorn or buckwheat drop biscuits with honey butter
Nutty, foraging-adjacent flour in a biscuit, nurturing and very hard to stop eating.

To sip

Pine needle and lemon hot tea (no alcohol)
Tastes like a cold walk in the woods and warms your hands while you talk.
Spiced apple cider with a sprig of mint or wild bergamot (no alcohol)
Homey, familiar, with one foraged flourish floating on top.
Elderflower or blackberry cordial topped with sparkling wine
A gentle wild-fruit indulgence for anyone who wants a little fizz.

Run of show

7:00
Door, blanket, mug
Hand everyone a hot drink before they take their coat off. Pile throws on the couch arm.
7:15
Show and tell table
Guests set out anything they brought: a jar of jam, a pressed leaf, a photo of a plant they cannot identify.
7:30
Warm-ups over snacks
Pass the skillet dip and run the two warm-up questions. No hands raised, just talking.
7:50
Theme questions
Work through the four theme cards. Let tangents about grandmothers and gardens happen.
8:25
Pie and the deeper two
Bring out hand pies and refill mugs before the two deep questions, so nobody is hungry while being thoughtful.
8:55
Scorecards and leftovers
Fill out cards, read a few aloud, send everyone home with a biscuit in a napkin.

Host tips

  • Put a real paper plant guide or a phone-free ID book on the table. People will hover over it all night and it loosens everyone up.
  • Say up front that nobody needs to have finished the book. This one is easy to dip into and the conversation works either way.
  • Ask guests to bring one food memory instead of a dish if cooking feels like too much. It keeps the night low-pressure and the talk gets better.
