Night People

Mark Ronson
Cozy night

Mark Ronson's memoir of learning to DJ in 1990s New York is a warm, generous look back at smoky rooms, crate digging, and the songs that made strangers into a crowd. It is short, funny, and full of music you will want to put on immediately.

Night People, Daytime Hours

Come read about 90s New York nightlife and then discuss it in soft pants with a tray of baked ziti. Hot chocolate, cheap beer, and one song each, no cover charge.

Reading level: Easy Pages: 256

Best for: A club that loves music, memory, and a night where the conversation wanders happily off-script

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.Before we talk about the book at all: what song, if someone put it on right now, would make you feel instantly at home?
  2. 2.Reading this, did you find yourself missing a particular place or period of your own life? Tell us a little about it.

Digging in

  1. 1.Ronson writes about the 1990s New York night as a world with its own rules and warmth. Did it read to you as a place you wish you could have wandered into, or one you were glad to visit only on the page?
  2. 2.Which passage made you feel the most tenderness toward young Mark, still figuring it out and not yet good at it?
  3. 3.The book is largely about learning a craft slowly, in public, badly at first. What were you once a beginner at, and who was kind to you while you were?
  4. 4.A DJ's whole job is reading a room and giving people what they need. Where in your own life do you do a version of that, and does it feel like love or like labor?

Going deep

  1. 1.By the time you closed the book, did it feel more like a love letter to a vanished city or like a thank-you note to the people who let him in? Which reading comforted you more?
  2. 2.Ronson is looking back at his younger self with decades of distance and a lot of affection. If you wrote 256 pages about one stretch of your early twenties, what would you want to be gentle about?

On the table & to sip

To eat

Bodega-style egg and cheese on a soft roll, cut into halves
The 4 a.m. New York breakfast that ends every long night. Easy to make a tray of, and it tastes like getting home safe.
Big foil tray of baked ziti
Downtown-after-the-club comfort food. Make it in the afternoon, pull it out warm, let people go back for seconds in their socks.
Warm black and white cookies
The most New York cookie there is, and a quiet nod to a book about mixing two things into one good thing.

To sip

Hot chocolate with a little cinnamon and too much whipped cream (no alcohol)
Entirely non-alcoholic, entirely indulgent. The after-party drink for people who now like to be in bed by eleven.
Spiked coffee with milk and brown sugar
The DJ's drink, softened. Coffee kept the night going, the whiskey keeps the stories going.
Cheap-beer-in-a-can bucket on ice
Nobody in a 90s club booth was drinking anything fancy. Low effort, high accuracy, no cocktail shaking required.

Run of show

7:00
Doors open, soft landing
Low lamps, no overhead lights, playlist already going. Hot chocolate and the egg and cheese halves out so nobody has to ask for anything.
7:20
Warm-up round
Go around with the two warm-up questions. No book talk required yet, just songs and places people miss.
7:45
Ziti and theme questions
Serve the tray while you move through the theme questions. Food in hand makes people talk more loosely, not less.
8:30
Dedication break
Pass the aux. Everyone plays ninety seconds of one song and says who or what it belongs to. This is usually the best part of the night.
8:55
Deep questions with cookies
Warm the black and whites, dim things further, and take the last two questions slowly. Silence is fine here.
9:30
Scorecards and next pick
Fill out cards, read a few out loud, choose the next book while the last song plays out.

Host tips

  • Make the ziti and hot chocolate base in the afternoon so you are sitting down when people arrive. A hosted cozy night fails the second the host is still cooking.
  • Put a real speaker on and keep the music at talking volume the whole time. For this book the sound is half the hospitality.
  • Let the conversation drift into people's own memories and do not herd it back. The questions are a starting point, not an agenda.

Playlist

Soft-focus 90s New York at 2 a.m.: hip hop, soul samples, and slow jams, all played a few notches quieter than the book lived them.

  3. 03 Brown Sugar - D'Angelo
