Saved By The Pack

Saved By The Pack

Lee Asher
Cozy night

Lee Asher's story of a life reshaped by rescue dogs is a big-hearted, easy-to-love read about second chances for animals and the people who save them. It is the rare pick that gets a whole room talking about their own pets within five minutes.

Bring a Blanket, a Pet Photo, and Your Softest Heart

We are reading Lee Asher's Saved By The Pack and turning the lights low for it. Soup in mugs, a cocoa bar, and a long easy evening of dog stories. Come as rumpled as you like.

Reading level: Easy

Best for: A club of animal lovers who want to laugh, tear up a little, and leave feeling lighter.

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.Before we talk about the book at all: tell us the name of an animal you have loved, and one small thing that animal did that still makes you smile.
  2. 2.Was there a moment early on where you put the book down and went to find your own pet (or wished you had one)? What triggered it?

Digging in

  1. 1.This is a book about dogs nobody else wanted. Which dog in these pages stayed with you after you closed the book, and what was it about that one?
  2. 2.The pack lives a life stripped down to the essentials, on the road, together. What part of that sounded genuinely comforting to you, and what part sounded hard?
  3. 3.Asher writes a lot about animals teaching humans rather than the other way around. Was there a lesson in here you felt in your chest rather than just understood?
  4. 4.Rescue stories can be heavy. What did the author do that made the hard parts bearable for you as a reader, and did it work?

Going deep

  1. 1.The title suggests the saving went both directions. Looking back across the whole book, when did you first feel that flip happening for him, and have you ever been on the receiving end of that kind of rescue?
  2. 2.By the end, the pack has become a kind of family with its own rules and rhythms. What did this book make you believe about where family actually comes from, and did it change anything about how you want your own home to feel?

On the table & to sip

To eat

Big pot of slow-cooker chicken and dumplings
Road-trip comfort in a bowl, served in mugs so people can hold it in their laps while they talk about their dogs.
Campfire-style skillet cornbread with honey butter
Nods to the open-road, cook-what-you-have life in the book, and it is one pan and almost no effort.
Decorated "good dog" sugar cookies (bone and paw shapes)
Sweet, a little silly, and gives everyone something to do with their hands during the quieter questions.

To sip

Spiced apple cider warmed on the stove (no alcohol)
Non-alcoholic, smells like the whole house is hugging you, and stays hot for latecomers.
Hot cocoa bar with marshmallows, cinnamon, and a splash of bourbon on the side
Self-serve so guests choose their own indulgence level, cozy centerpiece with zero hosting pressure.
Mulled red wine with orange and clove
Low-effort warm wine that suits a long, slow evening of stories.

Run of show

7:00
Arrive and warm up
Cider on the stove, blankets on the couch arms, pet photos taped to the fridge as guests come in.
7:15
Pet show and tell
Everyone shares the animal they brought a photo of. This is the warm-up question and it doubles as icebreaker.
7:35
Soup in mugs
Serve the chicken and dumplings and cornbread. Let people eat while the first theme questions start, no formal seating needed.
8:00
The heart of it
Work through the theme questions. Let silences sit. Nobody has to speak in order.
8:35
Cocoa bar and the deep two
Move to dessert, hand out cookies, then ask the two deeper questions once everyone is holding something warm.
9:05
Trivia, scorecards, slow goodbye
Light trivia for laughs, fill in scorecards, pick next month's book, send leftovers home in jars.

Host tips

  • Ask guests to bring one photo of a pet (current, childhood, or a neighbor's dog they are fond of). It makes the room instantly personal.
  • Put the food out before the talking starts so nobody is up and down mid-answer, and keep everything mug-or-plate-on-lap friendly.
  • Say out loud at the start that this book can bring up grief about pets people have lost, and that teary is welcome and so is passing on a question.

Playlist

Soft Americana and acoustic folk, like a porch at dusk with dogs asleep at your feet.
