Book Club Night Kit
Simultaneous

Simultaneous

Eric Heisserer
Cozy night

Eric Heisserer, the screenwriter behind Arrival, brings his gift for warm, time-bending human stories to the page in this 2025 novel about connection across distance and moment. It is a book that rewards reading slowly with a blanket and a hot mug nearby.

Bring Your Softest Socks, We Are Reading Simultaneous

Two soups, a skillet of apple crisp, and Eric Heisserer's Simultaneous waiting under a pile of blankets. Come as you are, finished or not, and stay as long as the cider lasts.

Reading level: Moderate Pages: 288

Best for: A club that likes a little speculative shimmer but comes mostly for the feelings, the snacks, and each other

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.Where did you do most of your reading of this one, and did the place you read it change how it landed for you?
  2. 2.Was there a moment early on where you thought, oh, I am going to be kept company by this book? What was it?

Digging in

  1. 1.This is a story about two things being true at once. When in your own life have you felt like you were living in two places or two versions of yourself at the same time?
  2. 2.Which small, ordinary detail in the book (a room, an object, a habit, a bit of weather) stayed warm in your memory after you put it down?
  3. 3.Heisserer wrote Arrival, which treats time as something soft rather than a straight line. Did reading this book make time feel gentler or more frightening to you?
  4. 4.Who did you want to feed, hug, or hand a blanket to while reading, and what would you have said to them?

Going deep

  1. 1.Without giving anything away, was there a passage that made your chest tighten or your eyes sting? Read us a line or two and tell us what it touched in you.
  2. 2.By the time you closed the book, did it leave you feeling held or feeling restless? Sit with that for a second before you answer, and tell us what in your own life that feeling belongs to.

On the table & to sip

To eat

Two-pot soup bar (tomato and a creamy potato leek), served in mugs
Two soups, one meal, a small nod to the book's doubled premise, and mug-soup means everyone can keep a hand warm while they talk
Grilled cheese fingers cut small, with a little tray of add-ins
Classic dunking comfort food, easy to make in batches, and finger-sized so nobody has to stop mid-sentence to cut anything
Warm skillet apple crisp with vanilla ice cream
Hot and cold in the same bowl, which is exactly the book's mood, and it fills the house with a smell that makes people stay late

To sip

Honey-cinnamon steamed milk (dairy or oat) (no alcohol)
A nursery-warm, caffeine-free mug for the end of the night when the conversation goes quiet and soft
Mulled cider with orange peel and clove, kept on low all evening (no alcohol)
Low effort, scents the whole room, and the slow simmer sets the unhurried pace you want for this book
Hot buttered rum or a spiked cider pour, offered as an optional top-up
Keeps it inclusive: same mug, same cider, a splash only for those who want it

Run of show

7:00
Arrive and claim a mug
Soup and cider are already warm. No seating chart, no agenda, just let people drift in and settle.
7:20
Blanket and bowl round
Everyone fills a bowl and grabs a throw, then does the two warmup questions. Keep it loose and let people interrupt each other.
7:45
The theme stretch
Work through the four theme questions. If one lands hard, stay there. Skipping a question is fine.
8:20
Crisp break and trivia
Pull the apple crisp out, run the trivia cards as a group with no scorekeeping, and let the room reset.
8:45
The soft deep end
Lights down a notch, steamed milk poured, the two deep questions. Invite people to read a line aloud rather than explain.
9:15
Scorecards and lingering
Pass out scorecards and bookmarks, read a few answers aloud, and let the night taper rather than end.

Host tips

  • Say out loud at the start that it is fine if someone did not finish. One sentence of permission keeps three people from staying quiet all night.
  • Keep the two soup pots on the lowest setting all evening so latecomers and second helpings never require you to get up and host.
  • When someone's answer goes somewhere tender, resist filling the pause. Count to five. The best part of a cozy night usually arrives right after the silence.

Playlist

Hushed and glowing, mostly piano, soft strings, and voices that sound like they are in the next room, kept low enough to talk over
