The Mother-in-Law Book Club

The Mother-in-Law Book Club

Kate Hash
Cozy night

A rootless traveling consultant gets pulled into a Durham book club by her future mother-in-law, and the women there quietly rearrange what she thought she wanted. It is a warm, big-hearted novel about chosen family that practically begs to be read by a book club, in a book club.

Come Be Claimed By Us

Bring yourself and a mug, and we will handle the biscuits, the cobbler, and the sweet tea. We are reading The Mother-in-Law Book Club, which is a book club book, so honestly we are just doing what the characters do.

Reading level: Easy

Best for: A club that already feels like friends and wants an evening of soft lamps, second helpings, and stories that wander off topic in the best way

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.Before we talk about Andi at all: what made you join a book club in the first place, and did you get what you came for?
  2. 2.Which moment in the Durham book club scenes made you want to pull up a chair and stay, and what was it about that room that felt inviting?

Digging in

  1. 1.Andi has made a life out of leaving before anywhere can claim her. Was there a season when you lived like that, and what did it feel like to read about someone else doing it?
  2. 2.Mother-in-law relationships usually show up in fiction as a punchline. How did it feel to read one written with this much tenderness, and did it soften anything you carry about your own family-by-marriage?
  3. 3.The novel is very much set in Durham, with its particular Southern warmth. Which small details of place comforted you most, and what place does that for you?
  4. 4.The women in this club change Andi mostly by just continuing to show up. Who has quietly shown up for you like that, and did you notice it at the time?

Going deep

  1. 1.Andi starts the book certain about what she wants. As that certainty loosens, what did you find yourself hoping for her, and did your hope have more to do with her or with you?
  2. 2.Without giving anything away: what did this book leave you wanting to do differently in your own life, even in some very small way?

On the table & to sip

To eat

Pimento cheese and buttery crackers
The classic North Carolina spread, exactly the sort of thing someone brings to a Durham book club because it takes ten minutes and makes everyone happy.
A pan of warm cheddar drop biscuits with honey butter
Homey, a little indulgent, and best passed around in the pan. Southern hospitality you can hold in your hand.
Skillet peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream
Peaches and a warm scoop melting into them is the taste of being fussed over by someone's mother, which is the whole emotional center of this book.

To sip

Spiced sweet tea punch (served warm) (no alcohol)
Sweet tea is the regional non-negotiable, and warming it with cinnamon and orange turns it into a mug you can wrap both hands around. Fully non-alcoholic.
Bourbon-spiked hot cider
One pot on the stove, a bottle alongside so people pour their own. Soft, Southern, and gently loosening to the conversation.
Front porch white wine spritzer with peach
Low effort, low alcohol, and it tastes like a long evening on somebody's screened porch in North Carolina.

Run of show

7:00
Door open, mugs out
Have the warm sweet tea punch already steaming and the pimento cheese on the table. Nobody should have to ask where anything is.
7:15
Biscuits and catching up
Deliberately do not start the book talk. Let fifteen minutes of pure life news happen, because that is what the club in the novel would do.
7:35
Warm-up circle
Ask the two warm-up questions going around the room so even the quietest reader has already spoken once.
7:55
Theme talk
Work through the four theme questions loosely. Let tangents run, they are usually the good part.
8:35
Cobbler and the deeper two
Bring out the warm cobbler, then ask the two deep questions while everyone has a bowl. Dessert makes honesty easier.
9:10
Scorecards, trivia, and next pick
Fill out scorecards, run the trivia for fun, and choose the next book before anyone puts their coat on.

Host tips

  • Pick seating with a real couch in it. Cozy collapses the second people are in a formal circle of dining chairs.
  • Say up front that nobody has to have finished, and nobody will be quizzed. Low pressure is the entire point of this vibe, and this particular book forgives a slow reader.
  • Have the questions on cards and let someone else read them aloud. It keeps you free to refill mugs, which is the real host job tonight.

Playlist

Soft Southern porch music: warm acoustic guitar, close harmonies, and the kind of voices that sound like they are sitting in the room with you.
