Book Club Night Kit
The Perilous Fight

The Perilous Fight

Colin Kaepernick with Nick Chiles
Cozy night

A Super Bowl quarterback turned civil rights activist walks through the moments that shaped who he became, told plainly and personally. It is short, sincere, and built for a room that wants to talk about their own turning points.

Chili, Cocoa, and a Quarterback's Story

Come sit on the couch with us for a warm, easy night of chili, hot cocoa, and Colin Kaepernick's memoir of the moments that made him. Bring socks, bring your own turning point, finishing the book is optional.

Reading level: Easy

Best for: A club that likes sharing their own stories as much as the book's, over second helpings and no rush

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.Before you opened this, what picture of Colin Kaepernick did you carry around? Say it out loud, gently, no judgment in this room.
  2. 2.Where did you read most of this book, and did it end up being a couch book, a bus book, or a stay-up-late book for you?

Digging in

  1. 1.The book is built around defining moments. Which one made you put the book down for a second and just sit with it?
  2. 2.So much of this story is about a kid figuring out where he fits, in a family, a team, a town. When did you first feel like the odd one in a group you loved?
  3. 3.Who were the people who showed up for him along the way, sometimes in small ways? Who has quietly shown up for you like that?
  4. 4.Sports here is partly about belonging and being seen. What was your version of that: a team, a choir, a kitchen, a church, a group chat?

Going deep

  1. 1.There is a lot of tenderness in this book alongside the hard parts. What did the softness in it do to you, if you were expecting only toughness?
  2. 2.Looking back across the whole book, what does he seem to want a young reader to feel about themselves? Is there a young person in your life you would hand this to, and what would you say when you did?

On the table & to sip

To eat

Big pot of turkey chili with a toppings tray (cheddar, sour cream, scallions, crushed tortilla chips)
Stadium-adjacent comfort without the stadium noise, and it simmers while you talk. Set out bowls and let people go back for more.
Skillet cornbread with honey butter
Warm from the pan, cut in wedges, a nod to the American family-table heart of this memoir. Low effort, high payoff.
Pan of sheet-cake brownies with vanilla ice cream
The dessert of childhood kitchens and after-game celebrations, served in squares on napkins. Deliberately unfussy.

To sip

Spiced hot cocoa bar (marshmallows, cinnamon, orange peel) (no alcohol)
A sideline-in-the-cold drink turned cozy centerpiece. Also the easiest way to get people standing together and chatting.
Cinnamon-apple cider, kept warm in a slow cooker (no alcohol)
Fall-Sunday-afternoon in a mug, no tending required all night.
Bourbon-spiked cider (optional pour, set the bottle beside the pot)
Lets anyone who wants a grown-up version add their own, without making the night about drinking.

Run of show

7:00
Door, mug, blanket
Cocoa and cider are already warm. Hand everyone a drink before they take their coat off, and point at the couch.
7:20
Chili line
Serve buffet-style so people eat while they settle. Nobody waits for a signal to start.
7:40
Warm-ups, bowls in laps
Go around with the two warm-up questions. Keep it light, let people talk over each other a little.
8:05
The moments that stuck
Move into the theme questions. Invite people to read out a page that got them, no analysis required.
8:40
Brownies and the two deep ones
Bring out dessert first, then ask the deeper questions. Sugar makes honesty easier.
9:10
Trivia, scorecards, soft landing
Run trivia for laughs, fill in scorecards, let people drift toward the door whenever they want.

Host tips

  • Say up front that reading the whole thing was optional. Somebody got to page 60 and will stay quiet all night otherwise.
  • Because this is a real person's life, steer the room toward feelings and personal stories rather than politics. If it drifts, ask the next question instead of refereeing.
  • Keep one lamp on instead of the overhead light, and have a stack of throw blankets by the couch. It does most of the hosting for you.

Playlist

Warm soul and gentle gospel-tinged R&B, played low, the kind of record that makes a living room feel like somebody's home.

  2. 02 Lean on Me - Bill Withers
