Six friends speak their inner lives aloud from childhood to old age, in prose that moves like tide and light. It is less a plot to solve than a mood to sink into together, which makes it a surprisingly tender book to share.
Why it works for clubs
- Six distinct voices mean everyone finds a different favorite to defend
- It is short enough to reread passages aloud at the table
- Big, warm themes (friendship, growing up, who we are when alone) need no expertise
- Readers often disagree about how it felt, which is the gentlest kind of debate
Warm-up questions
- 1 Where did you do most of your reading of this one, and did you need a blanket, a quiet room, or a second cup of something to settle into it?
- 2 Whose voice did you find yourself most relieved to come back to, like hearing a familiar person in the next room?
Digging in
- 1 The book keeps returning to the sea and the changing light of a single day. Which of those interludes felt most like a comfort to you, and which felt lonely?
- 2 Woolf lets us hear what people think but rarely say to each other. Did that feel intimate and warm to you, or a little like eavesdropping?
- 3 The six friends circle back to a handful of childhood images for the rest of their lives. What small early image from your own life has stayed with you the same way?
- 4 There are scenes of these friends simply sitting together at a table. Did reading those make you want to call someone, and who came to mind?
Going deep
- 1 By the later sections, the voices have carried their younger selves a long way. Did following them that far feel consoling to you, or quietly sad, and was that a feeling you wanted to stay in?
- 2 The book suggests we are partly made of the people we grew up alongside. Reading it, did you feel more like one of those six voices or like a blend of everyone you have loved?

Host tips
- Say up front that nobody needs to have finished it. This book is often loved in pieces, and permission to admit that unlocks the whole evening.
- Keep one copy on the table and read aloud early. Hearing the prose in a human voice converts the people who found it hard going on the page.
- Plan for quiet. Count to five before rescuing a pause, and the most interesting answers will arrive on their own.
Bring your copy of The Waves, however far you got, and a passage you want to say out loud. There will be fish pie, warm scones and a very large pot of tea.
