Book Club Night Kit
Vibe

Vibe

Adam Grant
Cozy night

Adam Grant turns his attention from how we think to how we connect, asking what quietly strengthens or erodes the bonds between us. It is a book that makes you want to text three people the moment you put it down.

Soup, Blankets, and the People We Keep

Adam Grant's 'Vibe' is about what holds our bonds together, so we are gathering over a big pot of soup to talk about ours. Come in your softest clothes, finished or not.

Reading level: Easy

Best for: A long-running club of friends who treat book night as much as a check-in as a discussion

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.Settle in with your mug and tell us: which person came to mind first while you were reading, and did you end up reaching out to them?
  2. 2.Was there a page where you felt oddly seen, the kind where you put the book down for a second? No need to explain the whole thing, just the feeling.

Digging in

  1. 1.Grant writes about what quietly reinforces a bond. What is one small, unglamorous thing someone does for you that you have never thanked them for out loud?
  2. 2.The book treats relationships as something tended rather than fixed. What is a friendship of yours that got better slowly, and what did the tending look like?
  3. 3.Which of Grant's ideas felt comforting, like permission you did not know you needed, and which one felt a little tender to sit with?
  4. 4.Reading about what erodes connection, did anything make you feel gentle toward a relationship that drifted rather than guilty about it?

Going deep

  1. 1.By the time you closed the book, had your sense of what you owe the people closest to you shifted at all? Take your time with this one.
  2. 2.If you could hand this book to one version of your younger self, which year would you pick, and what do you hope that person would have felt reading it?

On the table & to sip

To eat

Big pot of chicken-and-rice soup with a stack of bowls
The book is about tending bonds, and nothing says tending like ladling soup for people. One pot, zero plating stress.
Pull-apart rosemary bread with salted butter
A loaf everyone tears a piece from is the whole thesis in edible form, shared and better together.
Warm skillet apple crumble, spoons optional, one dish in the middle
Communal dessert for a book about connection. Bake it before guests arrive and let the kitchen smell do the hosting.

To sip

Honey-vanilla steamers (hot milk, honey, splash of vanilla) (no alcohol)
Nurturing, caffeine-free, and easy to keep topped up in a small pot on the stove. Good for a conversation that may run long.
Spiced mulled cider with orange and clove (no alcohol)
Simmering on low all evening so the room smells like the coziest version of itself. Serve in mismatched mugs on purpose.
Bourbon in the cider, offered at the table
A small pour alongside the cider pot so people choose their own warmth. Low effort, zero cocktail shaking.

Run of show

7:00
Mugs first, books later
Cider on the stove, steamers ready, blankets on the couch. No agenda for the first half hour and say so out loud.
7:30
Soup and bread at the table
Eat before discussing. Let people talk about their week, which with this book is basically pre-game.
8:00
Warm-up round
Go around with the two warm-up questions. One pass, no interruptions, passing is allowed and should be modeled by you.
8:20
The theme questions
Pick three of the four, not all of them. Leave long pauses. The silences are where the good answers come from.
8:55
Crumble and the deep questions
Dessert in the middle of the table loosens everything. Ask one deep question, maybe both if the room wants it.
9:25
Scorecards and soft landing
Fill in scorecards together, read a few out loud, send people home with leftovers and a bookmark.

Host tips

  • Say at the invite stage that unfinished readers are welcome. This book is sectioned enough that it is true, and it keeps attendance warm.
  • Have a visible opt-out. Tell everyone that 'I'll pass on that one' is a complete answer, because several of these questions touch real relationships.
  • Resist facilitating. If the group drifts into their own lives for twenty minutes, that is the book working, not the discussion failing.
