A collection of portraits of women who helped shape American history. It makes for a warm, easy night because each short portrait gets people talking about the women who shaped their own lives.
Why it works for clubs
- Short portraits make it easy to dip in, so nobody feels behind if they didn't finish
- Stories of courage and persistence lead naturally to talk about mothers, grandmothers, mentors, and friends
- Uplifting nonfiction, so the conversation stays hopeful and generous instead of heated
- Everyone can bring a favorite portrait, which gives quieter guests an easy way in
Themes & mood
Warm-up questions
- 1 Which portrait did you find yourself thinking about while doing something ordinary, like washing dishes or driving, and why do you think it stayed with you?
- 2 If you could invite one woman from these pages to sit here with us tonight, what would you serve her, and what would you want to ask her over a cup of tea?
Digging in
- 1 Many of these women kept going when things were hard. Was there a moment in the book that made you think of a woman in your own life who did the same quietly, without any recognition?
- 2 Which story left you feeling the most hopeful or comforted, and what was it about her life that gave you that feeling?
- 3 The title echoes 'We the People.' Who is part of your personal 'we,' the circle of women (family, friends, teachers, neighbors) who helped make you who you are?
- 4 Did any portrait bring back a family story or memory you hadn't thought about in a long time? We'd love to hear it if you feel like sharing.
Going deep
- 1 Reading these lives together, did you feel any gentle nudge to live a little differently, or to thank someone you've never properly thanked? What would that look like for you?
- 2 If someone wrote a short, loving portrait of an ordinary woman you know for a book like this, who would it be, and what would you want readers to understand about her?

Host tips
- Ask each guest to bring a photo or small keepsake of a woman who inspired them, and set up a little 'wall of women' display for people to look at during the night.
- Make everything ahead so you can sit with your guests. Pot pie and apple crisp both reheat well, and the cider can stay warm in a slow cooker.
- Set out a basket of blankets and dim the overhead lights in favor of lamps and candles to keep the mood soft and unhurried.
Bring your comfiest sweater and a story about a woman you admire. We'll share pot pie, warm cider, and good conversation about We the Women.
