Book Club Night Kit
Winter Street

Winter Street

Elin Hilderbrand
Cozy night

A short, snow-dusted Nantucket Christmas novel about an innkeeping family whose holiday plans wobble under the weight of old secrets and new love. It reads in a weekend and leaves everyone wanting to talk about their own families at the holidays.

Come In, The Cocoa Is On

We are reading Elin Hilderbrand's Winter Street and spending an evening on Nantucket in December. Bring your slippers, your softest opinions, and an appetite for chowder and sticky buns.

Reading level: Easy Pages: 224

Best for: A club that likes a seasonal, feel-good read and a night with more candles and cocoa than close textual analysis

Discussion

Warm-up

  1. 1.Before we talk about the Quinns, tell us one holiday tradition in your own family that absolutely cannot be skipped, no matter who is annoyed about it.
  2. 2.When you pictured the Winter Street Inn, what did you imagine it smelled like? Describe the room you built in your head.

Digging in

  1. 1.This family is scattered across different places and different troubles, and Christmas is the thing that pulls them back. Which character's arrival home felt most comforting to you to read, and why that one?
  2. 2.Hilderbrand writes Nantucket in winter rather than in summer. Did the off-season island feel cozy to you or a little lonely? What did that do to your mood while reading?
  3. 3.Each Quinn sibling is carrying something they have not said out loud. Which silence felt most familiar to you, and did you find yourself wanting to hug them or shake them?
  4. 4.The inn is a place where strangers are made comfortable while the family itself is a bit of a mess. Have you ever hosted beautifully while quietly falling apart? Tell us as much as you want to.

Going deep

  1. 1.Kelley holds this whole holiday together mostly out of love and stubbornness. Thinking about the parents and grandparents in your life, what do you understand now about that kind of effort that you did not understand when you were the kid at the table?
  2. 2.By the last pages, the family is not tidy but it is still standing. Did that leave you feeling hopeful or restless, and what did the book seem to be saying about how much forgiveness a family can hold?

On the table & to sip

To eat

Nantucket clam chowder in mugs
Creamy island classic, served in mugs so people can sip it on the couch instead of balancing a bowl.
Christmas morning sticky buns
The inn runs on breakfast, and a warm pan of cinnamon buns is the most forgiving thing a host can make ahead.
Cranberry brie bites
Nantucket is cranberry country, and these are four ingredients and twenty minutes for something that looks like you fussed.

To sip

Spiked hot cocoa bar
Big pot of cocoa plus peppermint schnapps or bourbon on the side, so guests pour their own holiday indulgence.
Mulled cranberry cider (no alcohol)
Non-alcoholic, simmered with orange and cinnamon all evening so the house smells like the book's best scenes.
Red wine by the fire
An unfussy bottle of pinot noir, exactly what you would pour a guest who just came in from the cold.

Run of show

7:00
Come in from the cold
Cocoa and cider ready at the door, slippers encouraged, no one has to say anything smart yet.
7:20
Chowder and warm-ups
Serve chowder in mugs and run the two warm-up questions while people settle into seats.
7:45
Theme talk by the candles
Move through the four theme questions loosely. Let tangents about people's own families happen, that is the point.
8:20
Sticky bun break
Pull the pan out warm, refill drinks, let the conversation go sideways for ten minutes.
8:40
The two big ones
Ask the deep questions with the lights low. Remind everyone that passing is completely allowed.
9:05
Trivia and scorecards
Light, silly trivia, fill out scorecards, send everyone home with a bookmark and a bun wrapped in foil.

Host tips

  • Say out loud at the start that finishing the book was optional and skipping a question is fine. It changes the whole temperature of the room.
  • Keep food in mugs, on toothpicks, or in a pan with a serving spoon. Nothing that needs a knife and a lap.
  • Have a throw blanket on every seat. It sounds twee and it works better than any icebreaker.

Playlist

Soft, slightly vintage holiday warmth: fireplace jazz, gentle crooners, and a little salt-air melancholy under the tinsel.

  1. 01 Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Judy Garland
  2. 02 The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole
  3. 03 River - Joni Mitchell
  4. 04 Christmas Time Is Here - Vince Guaraldi Trio
  5. 05 Winter Song - Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson
  6. 06 Snow - Bing Crosby
  7. 07 Coventry Carol - Alison Moyet
  8. 08 White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes
